Organic Foods How Organic foods are important in todays society. Choosing organic foods can make us feel healthier and help our environment. Without worrying about diet, organic foods are a smart choice. Choosing to eat organic foods is a good decision, especially for our health and the planet. Organic foods are free of bad chemicals, and have a lot more nutrients, taste, and give us sustainable energy. Eating all organic is hopeful for generations to come and our future. Eating organic foods is a great way to avoid chemical and poisons that are in commercial food grown. More than six hundred chemicals are active and registered for use in American agriculture today and billions of pounds yearly. Because organic foods cant be modified genetically in any way whatsoever, choosing to eat organic is the only way that we can be sure foods that are engineered genetically stay out of our bodies. Conventional dairy and meat are the foods with the highest risk for contamination by su bstances that are harmful to us. More than ninety percent of the pesticides we consume are found in tissues and fats of dairy and meat products. Reported by the EPA the majority of pesticide consumption comes from dairy, eggs, fish, poultry, and meat products, all these foods are high on our food chain. For example, a big fish that eats a little fish that eats another little fish increases the toxins in the food chain, and particularly in fatty tissues. Pigs, chickens, and cows are sometimes fed animal components, fish meal, grains, and by products that are collectively and heavily full of chemicals and toxins. Animals products that have less fat are much less dangerous, as chemical and toxins are concentrated and acquired in fatty tissue. Growth hormones, drugs, and antibiotics are also passed directly inside dairy and meat products. Millions of antibiotics are put in an animals food each year. George Harvey Strait was born and bred in the Texas cowboy tradition. He came into the world on May 18, 1952 in Poteet, Texas (â€Å"Strait Facts†) and was raised in nearby Pearsall, TX on his familys working cattle ranch, a legacy in the family for over 100 years. His childhood was spent working with his father and brother on their farm, and he carried on the ranching tradition by studying agriculture at Texas State University (Dickinson). In 1971, he married his wife, Norma, and shortly after enlisted in the United States Army. While stationed in Hawaii, he began playing country music with his Army-sponsored band, Rambling Country. His presidencytakes places between 1934 and 1940, during the time this novel takes place. Cardenasexpropriated foreign-held properties, distributed land to peasants, and instituted reforms tobenefit indigenous people and Mexican workers. Cardenas found it unfair for the Indians to notbe treated as equals, so he demanded rights for Indians. Land holdings were controlled by aruling elite. The Indians were encouraged to rise against the landowners and demand their rights. They have the law on their side and they start to realize they dont deserve to be treated as slaves. With the help of others, Cardenas breaks up large estates and forces families off of the lands. The novel is written from the point of view of the author, Rosario Castellanos. However, a sevenyear old girl is the narrator through most of ?The Nine Guardians?. She takes us through thebook by introducing the people surrounding her life and her familys life. The seven year old girl is the daughter of a wealthy landowner, Cesar Arguello. Since theArguellos are wealthy, the girl is not raised by her parents, but mostly by an Indian servant, shecalls Nana. Nana has nurtured and cared for the girl and her little brother, Mario, since birth. Nana is an Indian that lives with this elite, controlling, possessive, landowning family. Nana becomes a big influence onthe little girl, along with her parents, and the retaliation of the landowners and the Indians againstone another. The girl and her brother will become innocent victims mostly because of her father,who will try desperately to hold on to their land for Marios future. Some of the damage donecannot be fixed and will remain permanent. It is a tragedy of money, power, and malesupremacy. The situations that occur will leave a strong impact on how she thinks and feels. From beginning to end, the seven year old girls perspective of the Indians will changedramatically. In the beginning, the girl is ignorant to the thought of being an Indian. She doesnt wantto know their history and how they stand in their society. She speaks of how young she is andwants no part of what is going on. She loves her Nana but doesnt think she knows what she istalking about. The thought that she could have been an Indian threatens her. She wants to beidle, absent-minded, and not aware of her surroundings. Perhaps, she wishes this for Nana also. The Indians frighten her and she is ignorant of their part in society. Oedipus Rex The play Oedipus Rex may show mankind's search for a better society. The Greeks in the 5th century B.C. tried to make the most out of life. They wanted to know, what was the best way to live in that society at the time? The Greeks then began to study mankind. They began to determine between the rights and wrongs of the society. He who violated the social norms suffered throughout their life. For example, Oedipus Rex showed mainly three types of ?unmoral acts? that deified the social norms of society. The main three were his Intellectual Pride, Three types of Hubris, and his anger and rash judgment towards Creon. Prior to the birth of Oedipus Rex, a prophecy was spoken over Laius and his wife, Jocasta. They were told that their son would one day be his father's killer and would then marry his mother. In fear, kind Lauis and queen Jocasta sent the baby off with a slave to be killed. He was never killed, but rather was given to a childless king and queen, which lovingly raised him. Later in his life, several unknown men traveling confronted him. Upon confrontation, Oedipus Rex killed all but one of the men in self-defense. Unknowingly, Oedipus had begun to fulfill the prophecy for one of the men had been his father, Laius. While traveling, Oedipus had come to the city of Thebes. There he saved the city from the wrath of the sphinx by solving her riddle. He was a savior to the city, and was made king and married Jocasta (his mother). They ruled together and conceived four children. Although the truth had been spoken to Oedipus about these matters previously, he had chosen not to believe them. Oedipus's Intellectual Pride begins to unravel. He is looking for the murderer of the king (his father). He thinks 5 or 6 men killed the king because of money (bribery). No, Oedipus is wrong. He makes a lot of mistakes and he thinks he knows the answers to this situation. He is very self-confident and takes responsibility, as a king should. Oedipus acts too quickly and jumps to conclusions, while trying to figure out who committed this unmoral act that broke the social norm of their society. He asks Teiresias, but he refuses tell Oedipus that it was he who killed the king. But remember, Oedipus has already heard a prophecy about himself. His pride makes it difficult for him to listen to other people's advice and facts. He was so sure that he knew who the murderer was, but he was too ignorant. The answer was given to him but refused to believe it. Hubris begins to play a role in Oedipus character. Mainly there are three areas of Hubris he uncovered. The term Hubris means a behavior without proper limits; arrogance; insolence; defiance to the laws of the gods or moral laws. First, Oedipus has committed a murder and engaged in incest. He has mocked the gods. Oedipus solved the riddle of the sphinx and claimed he did everything on his own. In a sense, he looked down on the gods. The Greeks believed that there were powers higher than themselves. Man was great but not as great and powerful as the gods. Oedipus showed the opposite. Secondly, he shows the opposite by insulting the gods. He stated that he didn't need them in his life. Here he commits blasphemy, which is a term meaning, the act of speaking out against a sacred person. Lastly, his anger shows another hubris. He speaks out against Teiresias, stating that he was a wicked old man. In response, Oedipus showed no respect for Teiresias. For this, he will endure great Nemesis for his hubris's. Nemesis is a term, which means great punishment for going against a god. His failure to listen to the god's warnings resulted by making his life a living nightmare. He had committed the unmentionable and he'd rather not exist at this point. Oedipus, ruler of Thebes, murdered his own father and married his mother.
